Homework [06 Mar 2005|06:22pm]

[ mood | groggy ]

Hello all.
I'm in an HP course at my college (exciting right?)

and I need to pick a theme from the novels for a final project.
We were given some main ones but we can pick another.
This has to be a THEME and have nothing to do with plot.

Help me decide!!

These were the themes given:

Gender/Sexuality
Class & Equality
Colonialism/Postcolonialism
Race/Ethnicity

our main focus in the class is book #5 but we can use other novels as well

Thanks in Advance

♥, JB

Hi!  I'm Ashley The Commuter.  I just stumbled across this community and thought it would be cool to hear others' literary analysis of HP.  I'm an English Lit major at a small liberal arts college in the southeast, so literary analysis makes me happy.  =)  I'm also the mod of another Harry Potter literary community called harrynthepotter which discusses Christian symbollism in Harry Potter.  Feel free to join and post to your heart's content if you're interested!  =)

Hello everyone, I thought I'd quickly introduce myself. I'm Aesha, a huge HP fan, who just discovered the series a 2 or 3 years ago. Actually, I couldn't figure out what the hubbub was about, so I finally read PS/SS and fell into deep HP fandom. I belong to a yahoo group called Harry Potter for Grownups, where there's now over 10,000 members, so it's nice to know I'm not alone. :)

Poem. [21 Mar 2004|08:05pm]

This poem reminds me of Tom Riddle.

Man Alone

It is yourself you seek
In a long rage,
Scanning through light and darkness
Mirrors, the page,

Where should reflected be
Those eyes and that thick hair,
That passionate look, that laughter.
You should appear

Within the book, or doubled,
Freed, in the silvered glass;
Into all other bodies
Yourself should pass.

The glass does not dissolve;
Like walls the mirrors stand;
The printed page gives back
Words by another hand.

And your infatuate eye
Meets not itself below;
Strangers lie in your arms
As I lie now.

New here! [10 Feb 2004|04:48am]

I just discovered this community and was really interested. I am a huge fan of J. K. Rowling, yet many people I know who follow it well are also adamant slashers. You can call me Jen.

During the summer, after I read Order of the Phoenix, I contemplated writing an essay about the relationship between education and politics in OotP. I believe that this was very relevant, considering the relationships between Umbridge and the Hogwarts faculty and Dumbledore and Fudge. What are your opinions?

I had a dream the other night that I got a hold of the sixth book and in it Snape went back to being evil. Possibilty? I think it wouldn't work story-wise because he's the only legit connection between the Order and the Death Eaters.

need some help, please! [05 Oct 2003|02:17am]

[ mood | sleepy ]

a little back story:
i'm a literature student at a U.S. university. i was sitting in my Romantic poetry class a few days ago and my professor was reading us an article written by an angry critic who was complaining about traditionally "non-canon" poets are now being studied in college. my professor then compared this to how Rowling is getting tons of public recognition, but the lit community tends to shun and criticize her for being "non-canon" as well. he kind of hinted that he thought the author was in the right (to both arguments of the poets and Rowling).
most of my classmates agreed with the professor.

feeling frustrated, i thought that i'd write (and hopefully publish) my own essay as a backlash to all of these elitest literary critics, who like to say who and what is good enough to be "literary." or, maybe i just want to see something academic that actually support Rowling and the Harry Potter books.
i want to talk a lot about this controversy about Harry Potter not being "literary" enough to be canon. and, of course, i need something to support my argument (when i find it...).

so, what i am asking... can anyone PLEASE point me in the direction of any literary criticism about J.K. Rowling and/or Harry Potter to help me in my mission? i'd be soooooo grateful!

Intelligent HP discussion [19 Sep 2003|09:20am]

masqthephlsphr
Hi, I just joined this community and wanted to introduce myself. I keep a site dedicated to intelligent discussion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series, and several of my literary-minded on-line friends have been urging me to read the Harry Potter books. I had been avoiding the whole thing, due to some snobbery about its popularity. I was also left rather confused by both movies, and didn't give the HP world much thought.

I'm only half way through the second book, but I am now a fan. (And the movies make a whole lot more sense now!) It really is a richly detailed, magical world full of complex characters and morally ambiguous themes. Since I don't want to be spoiled, I'll wait until I finish the fifth book to jump into discussion, but I'm glad this board is here.
